1 pound penne pasta
1 pound broccoli, washed and trimmed
1/4 cup olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 T. dried crushed red pepper (optional)
In a large pot, boil pasta in salted water according to package directions. When "al dente," drain and set aside.
Steam broccoli 15-20 minutes, or until tender. Drain, reserving the broccoli water, and keep warm.
(Warning: It is imperative to reserve the broccoli water. Throwing it away in what is intended to be an effort to help one's mother clean up will most definitely result in injury ... at very least,
to one's eardrums!)
In a large saucepan, heat oil and garlic over medium heat until the garlic begins to sizzle.
Add crushed red pepper, penne, broccoli water, and broccoli to the pan. Simmer about 5 minutes.
Serve immediately, adding grated cheese and pepper to taste.
